The health department of Tamil Nadu government, along with National Network for Organ Sharing organised a one-day workshop on 'Organ Transplant in TamilNadu-The Future'  on March 2, 2007, to review the transplant scenario in the state. Doctors from all over Tamilanadu, most of them involved in transplantation in one way or other were invited to take part in the deliberations. The inaugural address was delivered by Thiru K..K.S.S.Ramachandran, Hon'ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Govt of Tamilnadu and the opening remarks were by Dr.R.Swaminathan, Chairman of National Network For Organ Sharing. Thiru V.K.Subburaj I.A.S., Secretary to government, Health and Family welfare department inaugurating the workshop, admitted that what happened in Tamil Nadu was nothing short of a racket involving trade in kidneys and the worstaffected were the poor and the marginalised who were compelled to sell their kidneys to settle their debts. The health secretary also said that the government is determined to end this racket and streamline the whole system and that this workshop is the first step towards that end.

The workshop was in the nature of four technical sessions: live donors, transplantation formalities, cadaver transplants and coordinating organization at the end of which the moderator of each session presented the groups recommendations to the health minister and health secretary.

ZTCC, Mumbai organized a two day conference on 'National Donor programme' on June 2nd & 3rd 2007. The inaugural function was attended by Shri Ranjit Kamble (Minister of State and Public Health, Rural development and water supply), the guest of honour was the mayor of Mumbai, Dr.Subha Raul.The two day consultation programme comprised of 5 sessions. There were presentations by doctors on various topics such as brain death, screening and maintaining, counselling, body disposal, on ZTCC, THOA, tissue banking, body donation, present scenario on organ transplant, hurdles faced at governement level, society level, in tissue donation etc. The two day programme ended with a resolution to the effect of forming a   National Body to campaign for deceased donor programmes.It was decided that the National body would be called 'National Deceased Donor Transplantation Network' and this would aim to facilitate deceased donor programme all over the country. Dr.Vatsala Trivedi has been nominated to be the Chairperson and Mr.Karunakaran, Trustee National Network for organ sharing, would be  its Joint Secretary.

A three day conference on comprehensive management of heart failure was held from the 17-19th of February 2006, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. The programme was organized by NNOS, in collaboration with Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC), Porur, TN, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, TN, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras and Ohio State University, USA.


Dr. S Thanikachalam, Chairman Cardiac Care Center, past Vice-Chancellor of SRMC, and Dr. George Chandy, Director of CMC, provided the academic leadership.

More than 300 delegates, including cardiac surgeons and experts in cardiology from the UK and the USA participated in discussions involving identification of heart failure, treatment with device therapy and transplantation of heart. The international faculty consisted of world famous physicians and surgeons from the field of cardiology. They were Dr. Abraham, Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Division of Cardio-vascular medicine at the Ohio State University Medical Centre and an internationally known researcher in heart failure, Dr. Beaver from the University of Wisconsin, USA, Mr. Olson, organ procurement and transplantation expert from Florida, USA, Dr. Palaniappan form the University of Ohio, Dr. Parameshwar from Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, England, Professor Pham, formerly from the University of Pittsburgh and an international authority on transplant vasculopathy and transplant tolerance, Professor Rosengard, the British Heart Foundation and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, England, Dr. Benjamin Sun, Dr. Tsui, Dr.Tehrani, Dr. Wallwork, professor of cardiothoracic surgery and Director of Transplant Service at Papworth Hospital , Cambridge, England.
